New Season – Keener’s Legacy

A new season is almost upon us! Starting on June 23rd, Keener’s Legacy offers 12 weeks of in-game activities and unique rewards. Season 2 brings a new Seasonal Manhunt, new Leagues, a new Global event and new unique rewards, as well as an Apparel Event.
 

New Raid - Operation Iron Horse

The True Sons have taken over a Foundry to develop new weapons and threaten to destroy everything the Division has worked for.
  • New bosses, puzzles and rewards!
  • Level 40 version available on June 30th, followed the next week by the level 30 version.
  • Discovery mode will become available at a later date.

Balance and Bug Fixes

Title Update 10 is bringing our first large balance pass following the release of Warlords of New York. Beyond the addition of new content, the update focuses on three main aspects mainly game health through bug fixes and balancing, generosity by increasing your chances to receive a high-quality item as loot and increasing overall player power. Missing Localized Audio

We wanted to inform you about an issue with localized audio that will be present when we launch Title Update 10 and Season 2. While the team was able to work from home to get this update ready, with your help testing the content on the PTS, we unfortunately were not able to record all localized audio content for TU10. With everything going on in the world, our top priority is the well-being of our teams, including our voice actors. Of course, we will start working on recording the missing audio with our partners when it is safe to do so and, in some cases, we were able to get things started already. Adding the localized files to the game as soon as we can in one of our next updates is an absolute priority for the team. This only affects Seasonal content. Operation Iron Horse audio is fully localized.
If you are currently playing with a non-English client, you don’t have to change anything going into Title Update 10. When localized audio is missing you will just hear the English audio instead. Subtitles have been localized and can be activated in the ingame options.
As work continues, we will update you on the progress of the integration here on the forums and on State of the Game.

  • Removed final World Tier 5 crafting bench upgrade, as its power increase is now redundant

  • Scheduled bounties, such as daily and clan bounties, are unaffected.
Developer comment: Bounties acquired in the open world should always provide challenge and loot appropriate to the world they were acquired in. Upping your global difficulty now has the added benefit of improving all bounties you acquire within it.
 

Projects

  • New Season Pass Holder Project Slot.
    • Season Pass holders now have access to an exclusive daily mission which provides a large bonus to XP.
  • Weekly SHD Requisition Project Slot
    • Endgame players at World Tier 5 and Level 40 now have a weekly supplies donation project which rewards them with an exotic cache. (For World Tier 5 players, this replaces the previous daily SHD Requisition project.)
  • Legendary Mission Project
    • After TU10, completing any legendary mission will grant you the Weekly Legendary Mission project slot.
    • Completing the designated legendary mission will reward you with an exotic cache.
Developer comment: With the addition of "re-rolls" to exotics available through crafting, we created the new Weekly projects to provide a reliable supply of exotic components or exotic items.
 

RPG Balance

 

Incoming Repairs

  • Incoming Repairs no longer increases the amount of armor repaired by armor kits, talents or gear set effects.
Developer comment: Incoming Repairs was always meant to be the defensive attribute equivalent to Repair Skills, so that players could further enhance the amount of healing they receive from their skills, or the group's healer. Unfortunately, the underlying code prevented us from differentiating between alternate sources of armor repair, such as those from talents and gear sets like Foundry Bulwark, or Firewall's unique armor kit effect. We wanted to address this during the development of Warlords of New York, but chose to post-pone the fix in order to deal with higher priority issues at the time. We underestimated the extent to which this attribute would affect the new Warlords meta, and failed to predict the severity of degenerate gameplay it would cause when combined with certain talents or gear sets. It's important to stress that this is not a PvP-only issue, or an instance of the PvP environment affecting PvE balance. Incoming Repairs was compromising both aspects of the game, and needed to be addressed, especially considering this update coincides with the release of a new raid. Not addressing the issue would mean forcing ourselves to balance all existing and future gear and talents around the knowledge that players could potentially (read: very likely) double the amount of repairs they receive, which stifles creativity and effectively limits player choice.
 

Weapon Handling

  • 1% Weapon Handling now gives 1% Weapon Accuracy, Stability, Reload Speed, and Swap Speed, up from 0.25%.
  • Reduced the maximum amount of Weapon Handling rolled on gear by 6%, to a maximum of 8% at level 40.
Developer comment: In the current meta, Weapon Handling on gear is considered a dead stat with no significant benefit. In TU10, equipping a piece of gear with +8% Weapon Handling will now give you:
  • +8% Accuracy
  • +8% Stability
  • +8% Swap Speed
  • +8% Reload Speed
This should hopefully make Weapon Handling a strong complimentary attribute for players looking to increase their overall accuracy/stability (bloom + recoil) and/or reload/swap speed. Making the % amount of Weapon Accuracy/Stability/Swap Speed/Reload Speed gained from Weapon Handling 1:1 will also remove another element of arcane knowledge from the game and reduce the need for additional mental math when determining whether the bonus is an upgrade or not.
 

Talent Changes:

  • Leadership: Bonus Armor increased to 15% from 12%
  • Spike: Skill Damage Duration increased to 15s from 8s
  • Reformation: Skill Repair Duration increased to 15s from 8s
  • Creeping Death: No Longer goes on cooldown if there are no valid nearby enemies to apply a status effect to. Status effects applied now properly copy the source status effect’s damage and duration.
 

PvP

  • Global Damage Modifiers
    • Reduced all PvP weapon damage by -20%
  • Additional Damage Modifiers
    • Increased MMR PvP weapon damage by 12.5%
    • Reduced Assault Rifle PvP weapon damage by -15%
    • Reduced Shotgun PvP damage by -12.5%
    • Reduced SMG PvP damage by -10%
    • Reduced Pistol PvP damage by -10%
    • Reduced Rifle PvP damage by -5%
 
_Developer comment: With TU10, there have been significant buffs made to the base damage of assault rifles, SMGs, and shotguns in particular. In order to prevent those weapons from becoming overly powerful in PvP, we’ve had to lower their PvP damage modifiers to compensate.

      • Now requires maintaining range and LOS (line-of-sight) for 3 seconds between the holster bearer and nearest enemy before applying the burn status effect.
      • Added visual UI feedback to reveal the radius of effect in PvP and an indicator for LOS between the holster bearer and nearest enemy.
Developer comment: This should help address the lack of contextual feedback in PvP, and add a much needed window of opportunity for counterplay, or potential to avoid the incoming effect entirely.

Developer comment: While we like to embrace emergent or unintended mechanics when the end result is unique and fun gameplay, True Patriot’s white debuff explicitly states it requires shooting the debuffed target in order to receive the armor repair effect. Pestilence’s DoT managed to bypass this restriction, making it and True Patriot (especially when combined with Incoming Repairs) scale to disproportionate levels of power when used together.

Developer commentary: We want dedicated skill builds to have multiple, powerful defensive tools for area denial/control. However, the strength of bleed effects meant being hit by just 1 stinger drone, mortar, or seeker mine was nearly a death sentence for most builds. The stinger hive should now better punish players who remain within its area of effect, rather than needing to rely entirely on the excessive damage of a single bleed DoT, while allowing the hive’s drone damage to scale higher for dedicated skill builds.

This said, we have noticed that the Cluster Seeker's accuracy has been a source of frustration so we've shortened the distance until it activates its "bullcharge" and adjusted when it decides to explode. These adjustments should make the Cluster Seeker feel more accurate, but these are measured steps as we do not want the skill to return to its OP TU7-state.

Solomon David power estimation

Following from my comment here
Swoleman D. is nuts. Ki Rata lets you move really fast, and maybe affect your personal movement through time. That would explain how the gore sprays literally freeze once they get far enough away from SD, and maybe even why he's ageless. If Ki Rata (or the key) lets him adjust the speed his body travels through time, he could put everything on fast forward (ie putting himself into stasis) until he gets asked a question. That would explain while he always has a fairly placid, faintly buddha-like smile (buddha for reference). He's not paying much attention most of the time.
I'm gonna put all that up to artistic license, anyway. I'm more interested in figuring out how fast he's going. Looking at flying objects and the movement of the characters gives insanely high speeds; if the circle of people around him is 8 meters (13') across then SD covered at least 50 meters to kill everyone and return to the center. It looks like they have basically moved millimeters or less, which would put SD's speed at up to .1% the speed of light. Relativistic velocity is >86% the speed of light, but .1% is still pushing fast enough for air to undergo fusion as it's compressed by SD's movement.
So that's unlikely. Probably anything >10 km/s is unlikely, because at that speed you're basically just a moving explosion. I think it's better to look at the minimum speed to give the impression of what happens in the comic. I assume that SD just tosses his rings in the air and everyone explodes. I'll say people can't even see it, which would mean he does it faster than the flicker frequency (<80 Hz) or 12.5 milliseconds. That'd be at least 4 km/s, or mach 11.7. I'd put the absolute minimum speed at at least 1,200 m/s (mach 3.5).
Mach 11 is well into hypervelocity. Hypervelocity is the speed where the bonds between atoms are basically irrelevant; at that speed water and concrete both feel the same. The resistance to movement is determined by how heavy the material is, not by how tough it is. Air breaks down into ionized, atomic oxygen, which eats through anything like the acid blood from alien.
Arguably that's the least of it. Momentum is proportional to both mass and speed. Air is 6,500 times less dense than steel, but SD's wake is moving at 4,000 m/s, almost twice as fast as rocket exhaust. It hits you like a truck. Scratch that, it hits you way harder than a truck. If SD moves at 4 km/s, he creates a localized tornado. Anything close gets puree'd.
Let's go with 1,200 m/s, so the meatsplosion happened in <33 ms. Mach 3.5 is much more reasonable; the sonic boom will deafen everyone and SD's skin would reach several hundred C if he did a 5K (this is slightly faster than an SR-71 blackbird). At this speed, anyone staring directly at SD might see him flicker. Even if you can fuck with time, air still has inertia; at this speed drag is many times higher than water. Ever try throwing a punch underwater? That, but seven times harder. That is why SD is so strong: he has to be, just to push through the air.
A pro can throw a punch roughly as fast as they can run. Very roughly guessing, at that speed the air drag force on SD's fist is about 2 tonnes. The power required for that is ~21 megawatts, about as much as a nuclear sub or a half dozen large train locomotives. The air blast from that is easily enough to blow holes in people, but most of that energy will go into heat so all those people in the comic are also very thoroughly cooked. His punch has an appreciable fraction (~15%) of the power of a jet engine, focused into a very small area.
Even if SD was moving at a paltry 700 mph / 1125 kph, just under the speed of sound (but with condensation zones appearing where air has to go supersonic to get out of the way), it's gonna cause a lot of wind. That's 10x faster than the speed I ride my motorcycle on the highway as far as any law enforcement needs to be concerned, and I make a lot of wind. SD would be creating a hurricane, and each of his footsteps should be creating deep depressions (and not just in the families of the gladiators). At 1,200 m/s his footsteps should be like dropping cannonballs into wet sand, and if he doesn't get a new step quick enough he might lose his balance. Dirt and stone will hold his weight for just a moment before crumbling and giving way.
At 4 km/s, SD runs like he's in a bouncy castle. The ground -dirt, granite, steel, it does not matter- sinks as soon as he touches it, pushing up waves around his foot. There's a sonic shockwave inside the dirt. The waves spray spallation into the air chaotically; stone or metal goes off like mines are being set off. As the shock passes through the atoms of the ground it pushes them closer together than they have been in a very long time (since they were at the center of the planet), and the bounce back pushes back up against SD's foot.
At .1% c, the shockwave is between 50x and 100x faster than the speed of sound in the ground. Those atoms haven't been this close together since they were in a star. They undergo... fission? I guess? Any hydrocarbons, hydrates, or water will also see hydrogen fusing. Honestly I'm out of my depth here; this is literally lightning fast, it's as fast as the fastest things we've ever seen or made except for subatomic particles or far-off stars and galaxies. All I can really say about it is that it's somewhere after "big explosions, lots of radiation, one less zip code" but still significantly far from "immediately turns into a black hole."
That said, SD did move/create a sun(s). Moving mass into a gravity well as deep as a sun's requires energy comparable to utterly disassembling that mass into individual atoms- that makes sense, since the gravity in the core of a star is intense enough to (very slowly) combine atoms through fusion. The mass of a star is hundreds of thousands of times more than any inhabitable planet, so even if it was an incredible investment of time and effort on SD's part to create a binary star system, utterly destroying a planet is gonna be pretty easy. It's like Warren Buffet spending 50 billion USD to build the biggest navy in the world a Mars base. Even after all that he can totally spare $100k on a beater for his grandkid to drive, just by virtue of it being 500,000x easier. If it took SD a full year to move those two suns, it'll take him 60 seconds to erase a planet. Assuming he doesn't just make a black hole.
Even then, death-star'ing the planet is overkill. SD only needs to kill everything +/- 10 km from sea level- that covers Everest and the Mariana Trench. It's also only 1% of the Earth's volume, and .5% of the Earth's mass. Solomon can teleport sun onto all of that, or just warp it into deep space. If it took SD 3 years to make those suns, it takes him less than ten seconds to do this. If it took him a full century, this takes him just under five minutes.
Alternately, he could individually punch every single person on the planet to death, one by one, a la Bowerick Wowbagger the Infinitely Prolonged. Earth has an average population density of ~100 people per km2 and a total of 7.6 billion humans. This is the travelling salesman problem (shortest path to visit a bunch of places), but some estimation gives us a guess of 12 km of travel per each 100 people. In reality that will be a very large underestimate, since humans always group together conveniently and you just need to make jumps between inhabited areas.
Lets assume it's right though- that's 91 billion km to cover. At 1,200 m/s that would take 2400 years. At 4 km/s, 723 years. At .1% c it takes 7.2 years, or 2639 days. Not a great option, doing 7.6 billion of something takes a long time.

[21yo] This is my financial story. Any suggestion for the next movement?

At first i wasn't sure about posting this because my context isn't the one of someone in a first world country, but hopefully you can still give me some advice or insight.
I live in a country of south america with a financial crisis going on due to the highest hyperinflation in the world. Two years ago I was living alone and studying in college, but suddenly my father lost his job so I moved back home and enrolled in another university while working part-time. After a while the crisis increased and he decided to move abroad so he could help us with more money. Unfortunately that didn't work for him, at the end he decided to settle there and is living his life with a minimum wage paycheck to paycheck.
On the other hand, due to the situation I had to stop college again to work full time in the company, teaching in a private languages institute. I considered myself kind of lucky because i was making one way more than many professionals here and certainly more than I could have made trying to find another job with my curriculum. It was ok because I was earning in dollars and most of jobs were paying with the national currency, which is literally nothing.
So, I spent 2019 like that; working hard, got a promotion and was earning almost enough to pay all the basic bills in my household, but feeling completely miserable because of how demanding and time consuming it was in comparison with what I was earning, which was around $350 dollars a month. Take into account that I don't have to pay rent and all the services here are extremely cheap.
On december I was expecting to get paid something for vacations but it didn't happen so I tried an idea online and made $700 in a week (merely luck) so I just spent the whole month resting and enjoying life again. Tribulation: Ancestries - A new twist on playing a race as a class

Hey all you cool cats and kittens!
Hope your quarantine is going well. I’ve lost all sense of time in the sensory deprivation chamber that I currently dwell in. Perhaps I’ll emerge once the virus has wiped out humanity as we know it, leaving only the morlocks, cockroaches, and remote freelance workers to inherit the earth.
Speaking of cockroaches, I wanna talk about bugs. Well actually, I’ll get to them later in a most circuitous fashion. What we’re really talking about are Ancestries.
For those just tuning in, this is part five of a series of posts about my ideas for a Heartbreaker RPG that I am dubbing Tribulation for now. The setting is kind of a fantasy western/WW1 thing with swords and guns and magic and mustard gas, but I want the system to be as lore agnostic as possible. You can find the other parts here:
So jumping right on into it, Ancestries are Paizo’s “pc” interpretation of Races, and I, for one, dig it. Race feels very binary, whereas Ancestry implies your character’s background is.... Soupier. It speaks more to the slight mutations from one member of a species to the next. Maybe not all tribes of elves see far. Maybe some have gills. Maybe your tribe intermixed with gnomes and you’re the cookie-making kind of elf instead of the arrow slinging kind. Maybe you’re a straight purebred elf, but were raised by orcs, and so you picked up one of their traits. It also extends the definition to cultures as well, leaving room for differences between humans from Cheliax and humans from Osirion. I live for that kind of stuff.
So Pathfinder 2e added a super cool system for picking and choosing ancestral feats, which I loved, but you can only pick so many and at specific level intervals. Which of course makes sense for game balancing purposes. You don’t want your players getting a buffet line of feats and abilities to the point that they outshine their own class. Right?
In certain editions of old school first edition D&D, your race actually was your class, as bizarre as that sounds. You had fighters and clerics and wizards, and then you had simply “elf” and “dwarf” right there alongside them. But it didn’t sound quite as outlandish when I thought about what it would be like to play as a monstrous race like a dragon, or a mind flayer, or a beholder. Most of their power comes from what they are rather than from any kind of class training, but because most ttrpgs revolve around classes, you typically won’t see such powerful creatures as core races. All the other mundane halflings and gnomes have to keep up with them after all.
In my system however, that’s not so much an issue. The system is classless and levelless, with all the features and abilities you could want available for purchase from the start using experience tokens. I’ll get into what serves as “class” features in a later post, but it’s worth noting that Ancestry Features draw on the same resources as class features.
What does this mean? If you’re a human, not terribly much. You may pick a couple of neat features and move on to building your preferred method of ventilating goblins. But if you play an ancestry that has a lot of advanced features, it means you can really go nuts with your ancestral features, but not become any more overpowered than your party mates, because the more resources you dump into that, the less you’re focusing on everything else. (Of course if you want to play as a human and dump all your XP tokens into becoming the most human human that ever humaned, by all means, yo. Become the Skyrim NPC of your dreams.)
So I haven’t yet decided how many Ancestries I wanted to add yet, but I definitely wanted all of the core D&D favorites. I had originally wanted to consolidate dwarves, halflings, and gnomes into one short people Ancestry, and then delineate them as Heritages (think subraces, but they can decide lots more than in core 5e or PF2e, like your size for instance), but everyone I’ve talked to so far hates that idea. So I’m still thinking about it lol. I definitely did have lore reasons for including trolls, orcs, and goblins under one goblinkin Ancestry.
Right now as I’m drafting the system, I’m loosely ripping all of the core races’ features from Pathfinder 2e, with the Feat Level simply being the cost in XP tokens of that particular feature. But with the other ancestries I’d like to include, I have to be a little less lazy and actually make some from the ground up.
Some Ancestries are kind of like templates that you can put over other Ancestries, like undead and planetouched. Their Heritages can include vampires or skeletons (who can later become liches with the right Ancestry Feats), and tieflings, aasimar, or genasi, respectively. The genasi in 5e in particular I thought were very underwhelming, so I wanted to make sure to show them the proper love they deserve. Sorcerer bloodlines are also gained and advanced using these template Ancestries as well, and in some cases the line between sorcerers as a class and sorcerers as a special ancestry can get quite blurry!
And then there are ancestries that are designed specifically to have a ton of features.
Golems - who start the game in a shape and material determined by their background, and then can mold themselves, cast themselves in different materials, and change their shape entirely as the game progresses. Base examples include straw golems (scarecrows), wood golems (nutcrackers or marionettes), and porcelain golems (fancy house servants who kinda look like lifesize porcelain dolls- have some basic spellcasting ability).
Beastfolk - Are anthro creatures and can use any ability that their equivalent animal can use in the bestiary, with the added bonus of being able to increase the effectiveness of such abilities. Rather than having Heritages when playing a Beastfolk, you just tell your DM what kind of animal you want to play. When I actually make the book, there will be a handful of examples each for mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, and insects, all your favorite flavors of furry. And if you want anything outside of those examples, then theoretically there will be a plethora of features available that you and your DM can use to cobble together your Tazmanian flying weasel or whatever.
For instance, do you wanna be Louis from Beastars? Here’s a handful of easy Features to slap on there to get you started as a deerfolk.
First the basic attribute buffs Your ancestry grants you 1d8 Heart. You gain a + to Perception or Agility You gain a + to Perception or Agility (repeated deliberately so you can double up if you so choose) You gain a + to any attribute
Next, a couple of basic features to get us started Antlers - You gain access to >> Antler Attack, a two action unarmed attack that deals 1d6 Piercing damage, as well as < Antler Disarm, a reaction that allows you to attempt to disarm an opponent that critically fails an attack against you. Hooves - Your feet are bony hooves. You gain a +2 circumstance bonus on attempts to trip or shove you. Vigilance - You have a +2 circumstance bonus to initiative rolls and can take reactions during surprise rounds.
From here, you can add as many additional features as you have XP tokens. Alongside antlers and hooves are upgrade paths for either of those, allowing you to make an Antler attack for one action instead of two, or upgrade the damage by a dice size, or allow you to equip horseshoes. For any mammal with fur, there’s an upgrade path that allows you to first grow it out long enough to gain a damage resistance to frost damage and better weather cold environment effects, and then the next step in that path is a damage resistance to physical attacks as it grows long enough to cushion blows.Vigilance has an upgrade path that allows you to take a move action as a reaction during surprise rounds. The sky is really the limit as far as what kinds of features can be added.
Oh! And my favorite features, some critters can hold items in their mouths, and later make weapon attacks with said items, while another ability called Run On All Fours lets you drop to your hands and feet and double your movement speed. If you invest in both of those features, you can go full Sif on your enemies, sprinting across the battlefield as a terrifying man-sized beast wielding a sword in its mouth.
But I’ve been playing a ton of Hollow Knight lately instead of doing anything, y’know, useful or productive, so I’m feeling bugs. So let’s build a bugboi.
To get in the Hallownest spirit, let’s name him Quirrel. I don’t really know what kind of insect Quirrel was supposed to have been, so let’s just pick a generic kind of bug. Like a… [frantically Googles ’generic bugs’] hemiptera? Sure why not.
Basic attributes: Your ancestry grants you a 1d6 Heart You gain a + to Constitution or Dexterity You gain a + to Perception or Intelligence You gain a + to any attribute
Basic features: Carapace - 1d6 Shield, Hardness 1 S/B/P. This tough exoskeleton is part of the body, but composed of tough proteins. It is restored during rests as though it were a Heart, but during exploration and combat, it can only be healed by means that would restore Shields rather than Hearts. Is expended before Hearts, but after any external armor or equipment. Limbs - You have an additional pair of appendages at the midsection which can hold an additional item each. This does not affect the number of actions you can take in a round. Open Circulatory System - You have damage resistance 2 to bleed damage, however critical hits landed against you will debilitate one of your Limbs on a failed con save. Compound Eyes - You cannot be flanked by less enemies than you have eyes.
Additional features: Carapace, Tough - 5 XP tokens. Your carapace upgrades from a 1d6 Shield to a 1d8 Shield, with a Hardness against S/B/P equal to your Constitution bonus (minimum 1).
Quirrel spent the rest of his XP tokens on features related to his background and weapons training (more on those in the next episode!) but he could very easily have opted for mandibles with a bite attack, a jump ability, some dope climbing speed, or any other bug stuff.
So all of that word count just to say, “Hey dudes what if there were race options that could optionally be played as a class?” What do you think? Awful idea? Interesting idea? Who the hell actually admits they watched Beastars? Hit me with your comments.
Maybe this whole isolation thing is starting to crack my fragile psyche. Maybe I’ll get around to posting my next topic sooner than not-sooner: Backgrounds that are more than just barebones backgrounds, but less than full fledged classes. We’re talking Occupations y’all. Also, curious as to why I listed "Perception" and "Agility" as attributes? Maybe a post on Tribulation's stat blocks is on the horizon. That one will be much shorter than whatever the hell this was. [LONG] My Story of Disillusionment with and Disappointment in the World and Myself

Intro.
This might be a long one. I hope someone reads the thing, I put like 3 hours into writing it. A brief story of my life and how it all led up to this moment, where I am disillusioned with my self-image, my life choices, and certain aspects of the world, and have no idea what to do next. Warning: this whole thing might be a little depressing to read.
Childhood.
I am a 20yo Russian male. During my childhood, I was made to believe that I am capable of doing something great and doing better than anyone. At the same time I developed a very non-conformist life stance and very often rejected things and ideas simply because they were too popular for my taste, and I couldn't feel special whilst enjoying them. Of course, in turn, society rejected me, as it does with anyone who doesn't play by the rules. Oh well.
My only redeeming quality was that I considered myself pretty smart. Which is even easier to assume, when at the same time you think that you're different from everyone else. Now, I know that to some extent, I was indeed smarter than most people in certain areas. Unlike most people I knew back then, often with bare minimum efforts I was able to maintain near perfect grades at school. I was also enjoying learning new things and reading more than an average person. So, let's just say, I had a basis to assume I was a smart dude.
I wasn't happy and content with my life, though. I never had real friends, because I only hung out with people when they were my classmates/roommates/co-workers, and after we parted ways, I rarely if ever contacted them afterwards. I always enjoyed doing things you usually do in solitude more, because when I was alone, I wouldn't be afraid that someone could hurt me for being different. Because of that, I was never in a romantic relationship.
High School.
Still, life was going okay. By the end of school, I kind of accepted my social deficiency and I wanted to focus on improving the world and become a successful person - for myself. I was facing a dilemma, though. Despite the fact that I was doing great in school, the idea of having to invest four years of my time into studying something really specific, and then having to work another 20-30 years on the same job was terrifying, because I had no idea what I liked to do! Nothing seemed interesting to me, I didn't have a passion for doing anything... Thanks to my video game addiction, which made me lazy as fuck, probably. I also needed to meet my criteria for success with my future job, which included being financially successful. I grew up in top 1% income family, so... I always felt the pressure to outperform or at least match my parents' income.
Enter trading. My dad discovered investing several years ago (we don't live in US, so most of the people aren't as financially savvy, so he never thought about investing before then). I was always curious about financial independence and markets, but now I was seeing it all done in front of me, I realized that it might be a good opportunity to make a lot of money and become successful without being socially adept, which is something absolutely required in business or politics. So, I asked my father to open a brokerage account for me in the US, and started swing trading (trading in weekly/monthly time frames). I could only trade slow and small because of the trade restrictions put on accounts <$25k and <21yo in the US. Still, it was going well, but in hindsight I was just lucky to be there during a great bull market.
Even before I thought trading and more importantly investing were the ways smart people make money. I thought simply because I was conventionally smart, I had a talent or an innate ability to pick innovative stocks and do venture investing when I grow some capital. I truly believed in that long before I was introduced to financial markets, I believed that my surface level understanding of multiple areas of cutting edge and emerging technology would give me an edge compared to all the other investors.
US Community College and Return Back.
In the end, I've decided I want to go to a US community college and study finance and become a trader and later an investor, but I didn't want to work for a fund or something like that (lazy ass). I wanted to use my knowledge and skill and my own money to grow my net worth and make a living. I didn't really like the process of trading, I just needed the money to live by while I was trying to figure out what else to do with my life. Because I thought I were smart, I thought this would come easily to me. Boy was I wrong. From the nicest of conditions in my hometown, I was suddenly moved into a foreign setting, on the other side of the planet away form my family and mates, with a video game addiction and laziness that ruined my daily routine and studying as well. The fact that I didn't like my major was not helping. My grades fell from A- in the first quarter to C+ in the last. I gained +30% from my normal weight. I was stressed out, not going outside and sitting at my computer desk for days at a time, skipping all the classes I could if they were not absolutely essential for my grades, living on prepared foods. I never got out of my shell and barely talked to anyone in English, all of my friends were Russian speaking. I wasted an opportunity to improve my speaking, although aside from that my English skills satisfy me.
By the end of community college, last summer, I was left with B grades that wouldn't let me transfer anywhere decent, and the extreme stress that I put myself through started taking a toll on my mental health. I was planning to take a break and go back to Russia for several months, and transfer back to a US uni this winter. Needless to say, you can't run from yourself. It didn't really become much better after a few months in Russia. I didn't want to study finance anymore, because it was boring and I was exhausted. I still had the video game addiction, still was lazy and gained some more extra pounds of weight. I was not sleeping at all, extremely sleep deprived for months. Because of this and lack of mental stimulation I started to become dumber. And all that was happening where I didn't really have to do anything: not study or work, just sit around the house and do whatever I wanted. Turns out, these conditions didn't help me to get out of the incoming depression.
Finally, around November, when I already sent out all of my transfer applications and already got some positive answers from several universities, I knew I didn't have much time left at home, and I had to leave soon. But I really, really didn't want to go back. It was scarier than the first time. I was afraid of new changes, I just wanted for the time to stop and letting me relax, heal... I was having suicidal thoughts and talked about it with my family and my therapist. They were all supportive and helped me as much as they could. But I was the only person who could really help myself. If I wanted to breathe freely, I had to admit defeat and not go back to the US to continue my education. It was extremely hard at first, but then I just let go. I decided to find a temporary job as an English tutor and give myself time to think. Then I remembered that I had a bunch of money in my trading account. I still thought that I was pretty smart, despite failing college, so I figured, why not try move it to Russian brokers who don't have trading restrictions, and do it full time? Which is exactly what I did. And I started to study trading all by myself at a fast pace. I was now trading full time and it was going sideways: +10% in December, -20% in January. Then, something incredible happened. I was already in a shitty place in life, but I still had some hope for my future. Things were about to get much worse. I'm in the late January, and I discovered for myself that the whole financial industry of the world was a fraud.
Brief Explanation of My Discoveries.
In the image of the financial industry, there are several levels of perceived credibility.
In the bottom tier, there is pure gambling. In my country, there were periods when binary options trading and unreliable Forex brokers were popular among common folk, but these were obvious and unsophisticated fraudsters who were one step away from being prosecuted. There are also cryptocurrencies that don't hold any value and are also used only for speculation/redistribution of wealth. There is also a wonderful gambling subreddit wallstreetbets where most users don't even try to hide the fact that what they are doing is pure gambling. I love it. But the thing is, this is trading/investing for the people who have no idea what it is, and most people discredit it as a fraud, which it, indeed, is. These examples are 99% marketing/public image and 1% finance. But these offer x10-1000 returns in the shortest time span. Typical get-rich-quick schemes, but they attract attention.
Then, there is trading tier. You can have multiple sub levels here, in the bottom of this tier we would probably have complex technical analysis (indicators) and daily trading/scalping. I was doing this in the DecembeJanuary. At the top would be people who do fundamental analysis (study financial reports) and position trade (monthly time frames). Now, there is constant debate in the trading community whether technical analysis or fundamental analysis is better. I have a solid answer to the question. They work in the same way. Or rather, they don't work at all.
You'd ask: "Why you didn't discover this earlier? You were in this financial thing for several years now!" Well, you see, unlike on the previous level, here millions of people say that they actually believe trading works and there is a way to use the available tools to have great returns. Some of these people actually know that trading doesn't work, but they benefit from other traders believing in it, because they can sell them courses or take brokerage fees from them. Still, when there are millions around you telling you that it works, even a non-conformist like me would budge. Not that many people actually participate in the markets, so I thought that by being in this minority made me smart and protected from fraudsters. Lol. All it took for me to discover the truth is to accidentally discover that some technical indicators give random results, do a few google searches, reach some scientific studies which are freely available and prove that technical and fundamental analysis don't work. It was always in front of me, but the fucking trading community plugged my ears and closed my eyes shut so I wasn't able to see it. Trading usually promises 3-15% gain a month.
A huge shock, but surely there was still a way for me to work this out? Active investing it is!
The next level, active investing, is different from trading. You aim for 15-50% yearly returns, but you don't have to do as much work. You hold on to stocks of your choice for years at a time, once in a while you study the markets, re balance your portfolio, etc. Or you invest your money in a fund, that will select the stocks of their choice and manage their and your portfolio for you. For a small fee of course. All of these actions are aimed at trying to outperform the gain the market made as a whole, and so called index funds, which invest in basically everything and follow the market returns - about 7-10% a year. And if I ever had any doubts in trading, I firmly believed that active investing works since I was a little kid (yes I knew about it back then). And this is where the real fraud comes in.
The whole Wall Street and every broker, every stock exchange in the world are a part of a big fraud. Only about 10-20% of professional fund managers outperform the market in any 15 year period. If you take 30 years, this dwindles to almost nothing, which means that no one can predict the markets. These people have no idea what they are doing. Jim Cramer is pure show-business and has no idea what's going on. Warren Buffet gained his fortune with pure luck, and for every Buffet there are some people who made only a million bucks and countless folks who lost everything.
Wall Street. They have trillions of dollars and use all that money and power and marketing to convince you that there is a way to predict where the stocks are going without being a legal insider or somehow abusing the law. They will make you think you can somehow learn from them where to invest your money on your own or they will make you believe that you should just give it to them and they will manage it for you, because they know how everything works and they can predict the future using past data.
They won't. They don't. They can't. There are studies and statistics to prove it countless times over the span of a 100 years. But they will still charge you exchange fees, brokerage fees and management fees anyway. And they also manipulate certain studies, lobby where and when they need it, and spread misinformation on an unprecedented scale, creating a positive image of themselves. And everyone falls for that. Billions of people around the globe still think it's all legit.
Passive index investing is the last level. You just put your money in the market and wait. Markets will go up at a predetermined rate. If there's a crisis, in 10 years no one will even remember. Markets always go up in the end. But passive index investing can only give you only 7% inflation-adjusted returns a year. Not enough to stop working or even retire early, unless you have a high-paying job in a first-world country. I don't.
Despite all that, to put it simply, this is the only type of investing that works and doesn't involve any kind of fraud or gambling. It's the type of investing that will give you the most money. If you want to know why it is like that and how to do it, just go to financialindependence. They know this stuff better than any other sub. Better than investing, trading or any other sub where non-passive-index investing is still discussed as viable strategy.
Back to me.
My whole being was fucked over, my hopes and dreams and understanding of success and how this world works were shattered. I realized, I had no future in financial industry, because only middlemen make money in there, and I quit college needed to get there. Frankly, I wouldn't want to work there even if I had the opportunity. The pay is good, but the job is boring and I wouldn't want to be a part of this giant scheme anyway. But even if I wanted to go back, I also couldn't. Russia is in a worsening crisis and my parents could no longer afford a US university and now with coronavirus it's even worse. Good thing I quit before it all happened. I learned a valuable lesson and didn't lose that much money for it (only about 10% of my savings). God knows where it would lead me if I continued to be delusional. But now that my last temporary plans for the future were scrapped, I had no idea what to do next.
The future.
With the reality hitting me, I would lie if I say it didn't all come full circle and connect to my past. I realized that I was stupid and not intelligent, because I was living in a made-up world for years now. But even if I were intelligent, pure wit would not give me the success and fortune that I was craving, because trading and active investing were a no-go for me, and business/politics require a very different, extroverted mindset, different education and interest from my own. My only redeeming quality in a hopeless introvert world, my perceived intelligence was taken away from me and rendered useless at the same time.
Besides, failing at that one thing made me insecure about everything and now I think of myself as an average individual. So, if 8 out of 10 businesses fail, I shouldn't start one because I will probably fail. And if most politicians don't get anywhere, why should I bother? If average salary in my country is X, I shouldn't hope for more. I stopped believing in my ability to achieve something. First, I failed at education and now I failed... Professionally? I don't know how to describe it, but my life recently was just an emotional roller coaster. I just feel like a very old person and all I want calmness and stability in my life. I was very lazy before just because, but now I feel like I also don't want to do anything because I feel I would just fail. It feels better now I don't have to worry about trading anymore and I got rid of that load... But I am still miserable and perhaps worse than ever, maybe I just don't understand and feel it because I've become slow and numb. The only positive thing that happened to me recently, is that I finally started losing weight and about 1/4 of the way back to my normal weight.
As for my future, am looking at several possibilities here. So far the parents are allowing my miserable life to continue and they let me live with them and buy me food. I don't need anything else right now. But it can't go on like this forever. The thought of having a mundane low-paying job in this shithole of a country depresses me. I will probably temporarily do English tutoring if there's demand for such work. My old school friends want me to help them in their business and my dad wants me to help him in his, I and probably should, but I feel useless, pathetic and incapable of doing anything of value. And business just seems boring, difficult and too stressful for me right now. Just not my cup of tea.
I am also looking at creative work. I love video games, music, films and other forms of art. I love the games most though, so I am looking into game dev. I don't really like programming, I have learned some during school years, but the pay would probably be higher for a programmer than an creator of any kind of art. However, I think I would enjoy art creation much more, but I don't have any experience in drawing and only some limited experience in music production. And I am not one of these kids who always had a scrapbook with them at school. Having to make another life choice paralyzes me. I am leaning towards art. I don't feel confident in my ability to learn this skill from scratch, but I think it's my best shot at finding a job that would make me happy.
So perhaps, when this whole pandemic is over, I'll go to Europe and get my degree, get a job there and stay. American Dream is dead to me, and Europe is cheaper, closer, safe and comfortable. Just the thing for a person who feels like they are thrice their real age.

Potential inspiration

This is a post on a throwaway account from an anonymous internet stranger... Treat it accordingly.
Hello all. I don’t have a question, I don’t need any help with my macros, I’m not selling anything, and I certainly don’t want to ask if I’m doing this right (what I’m doing is right for me).
TL:DR - Life is difficult, so make it easier.
What has given me motivation consistently over the past few months has been lurking on these forums (cross posted); so I thought I’d add to the conversation for a change.
My routine has changed my life, but I’m not posting here to tell you the ins and outs of my “one size fits all life changing routine”. Everyone is different and a random internet stranger can’t give you hard and fast rules to live your life. Take any specifics with a pinch of salt. I’m also not going to use this forum as an opportunity to rant about specific things in my life which have gone wrong, but will give some general context. Life isn’t perfect, and I’m well aware that everyone has their own demons to slay...
I’m a guy in his early 40s who has always had a bit of a problem with the way he looks (permanently chubby, no real muscular definition, acne, the list goes on). Recently my life has developed some some significant stressors in it which are utterly outside my control. Suffice to say the stressors are severe and while I’m currently unable to escape them, believe that I’m working on it... I’m sure a therapist would have a field day with me, but that’s a conversation for another throwaway account.
This period of stress has been exacerbated by a bad break up, and that exacerbated stressful break up has been ‘doubled down’ by feelings of self-pitying towards a situation where I believe myself to be the wronged party... I don’t like the word victim, but I can’t think of an alternative.
Contrary to what you’ve just read, I’m not generally the self-pitying type. When I realised that ‘self-pitying’ was an accurate description, I vowed to make a change.
I made the decision a few months ago to use this period to my advantage, and my secret is simple: consistent incremental progress.
I’ll say it slowly:
Consistent. Incremental. Progress.
I used to hate the cliche of “a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step” but it is true. So unbelievably true.
Ok; cathartic scene setting rant over...
What has helped turn my life around is investing in my physical wellbeing, with the idea that it will drag up my mental health with it. Once the stressors have been removed I fully expect this to happen. Between now and then I am a coiling spring. I’ve improved my diet, and am making so many small incremental changes that when I finally escape this (binary) situation I’ll spring back into this world with a genuinely new lease of life.
My motivation is a powerful one, but irrelevant to you, you’ll have your own. The result is the following:
I’m leaner, stronger, fitter than I was before. I sleep better, my skin has improved, my self confidence has rocketed, and all the little injuries I’ve accumulated over the years have been lessened or disappeared entirely.
My current routine is personal and has been the result of trial and error over many months. If I had the ability to go back and talk to myself six months ago I’d give ‘past me’ my current routine and explain all the reasons why based on hundreds of hours of research. Maybe I could make the consistent incremental progress easier?!
Strict Keto OMAD with a slight CICO deficit to my TDEE. Supplementing with ACV, electrolytes, vitamins, cod-liver oil, collagen, and a consistently building work-out programme of bodyweight exercises and light cardio.
I’m not medically qualified in anyway, so I won’t dive into the specific ‘why’ of each aspect, I’ll just give a general idea. Suffice to say the research I’ve done has led me to where I am. The information is out there (largely on Reddit, there’s some really clever people on these subs).
Keto helps me sleep better, that’s why I’m doing it. The ancillary benefit of keto is that it makes OMAD easier. OMAD makes a CICO deficit easier. CICO has now meant I’m physically in a much happier place (183 to 140 weight wise but the change in my body composition has been dramatic). OMAD (with occasional 48/72/120/168 hour fasts) has upped my autophagy and improved my sleep more than I thought possible. Teaming this with supplemented vitamin B and D has cleared up my acne (I’m the guy who after a year on accutane still had spots in his 40s so this has been a miracle cure). Supplementing collagen has reduced all my old broken bits; my knees no longer click, old sports injuries no longer hurt etc.
Working out has been progressive. My line of work mandates a certain level of physical fitness, but for years I was doing the absolute minimum because watching Netflix in my underwear was a more appealing option. Slowly developing my bodyweight and cardio routine has left me stronger than I’ve ever been, physically and mentally.
Having been overweight, I’m now at the lower end of normal BMI (I know it’s not a perfect metric, but sufficiently indicative for this post). My body fat is under 10% and maintaining. I’ve got the body I’ve wanted for years, and it’s improving every day. My skin is clear. I’m happier, healthier, and once the stressors are gone I can only assume I will be a completely different person.
As this is a throwaway account I won’t reply to any questions. But you don’t need me. An important thing to note is that my routine works for me, it might not work for you. That’s not my point.
My point is that life is hard. Making small changes that make it a little less hard will snowball. Before you know it, you will be a completely different person.
Whether you want to be healthier, or more attractive, or save money, or improve your mental health, or fit into that wedding dress, or pick up your kids, or walk the dog, or just love the reflection you used to avoid; whatever you want to do, consistently improving one baby-step at a time will get you there.
Like others have said before; don’t let perfect get in the way of good; we’re all human. Consistency is key.

Sales, Shipping, Warranty


Q: Are you going to sell this on Amazon in the EU?
A: We are working on getting the product up and running on Amazon. But our own BTO shop at www.bestware.com will always be our primary sales channel and will be the only one where you can customize and configure memory, storage, OS, extend your warranty and pick other options.

Q: Do you offer student discounts or other sales compaigns like black friday?
A: In general, we don't offer student discounts. Sales campaigns are planned just in time, depending on stock level and cannot be announced early. If you want to keep up to date about sales campaigns, please subscribe to our newsletter.

Q: Do you ship to the UK? Can I pay in GBP?
A: We ship to the UK - the pricing will be in EUR, so your bank will do the conversion. Warranty services will be available from UK, shipping to Germany. Currently, in the single markets, these resturn shipments are free for the end-user. In the worst case there might be additional customs fees for shipping.

Q: What warranty options do you offer?
A: All our laptops come with 2 year warranty. Warranty repairs in the first 6 months are promised to be done within 48 hours (+shipping). Both the "instant repair" service and the warranty itself can be extended to up to 3 years.

Q: Do you sell outside of Europe?
A: We are able to ship anywhere, but warranty for customers outside the region would always involve additional customs cost and paperwork for sending the laptop back to Germany in the rare event of an RMA. There is currently no agreement to let other Local OEMs (like Eluktronics in the US) carry the warranty for XMG customers and vice-versa. Some parts are customized (in our case the LCD lid and the keyboard) and it won't be easy to agree on how to share handling fees etc. - so I wouldn't expect a global warranty anytime soon.


Hardware, Specs, Thermals


Q: What is the difference between XMG FUSION 15 and other laptops based on Intel's reference design?
A: The hardware of the barebone will be identical. Other Local OEMs might use different parts for RAM and SSDs. Our branding and service/warranty options might be different. We apply our own set of performance profiles in the Control Center. This will rebalance the differentiation between Silent, Balanced and Enthusiast modes.

Q: What is the TGP of the NVIDIA RTX 2070 Max-Q?
A: Officially, it is 80W in Balanced profile and 90W in Enthusiast profile. You can toggle between these modes in real-time with a dedicated mode switch button. Inofficially, the TGP can go up to 115W in Enthusiast profile thanks to the Overboost mechanic, working in the background. However, those 115W may only be sustained until the system has reached thermal saturation, i.e. when the GPU is approaching the GPU Temperature Target of 75°C.

Q: Can I upgrade the storage and memory after I buy?
A: On storage: The laptop has two m.2 PCI-Express SSD slots. This will give you currently up to 4 TB of SSD storage. There is no 2.5" HDD slot available. Instead, the battery is enlarged to 93.48Wh. You can see pictures of the interior layouts here, here and here.
On memory: the laptop has two SO-DIMM DDR4 memory sockets. You can chose during BTO configuration, if you want to occupy both of them when you order the product. We recommend running the laptop in Dual Channel for high-performance usage.

Q: How easy is to upgrade and repair this laptop?
A: Here are the key facts:
We would give this a solid 8 out of 10 which is pretty high for such a thin&light design. The 2 remaining points are substracted for BGA CPU and GPU, which is unfortunately unavoidable in such a thin design.

Q: Does it support Windows Hello?
A: A Fingerprint-Reader is not available, but the HD webcam comes with Infrared and supports Windows Hello.

Q: Can I get a smaller, lighter charger for this laptop?
A: XMG FUSION 15 requires a 230W power adaptor to provide full performance. If you max out CPU and GPU with furmark and prime, the 230W adapter will be fully utilized.
There are currently two compatible 230W adapters. They have different dimensions but similar weight. Please refer to this comparison table:

Includes shop links. Will be updated with precise weight numbers in the next few days. I also included 120W, 150W and 180W in this table. They all share the same plug (5.5/2.5,, diameter, 12.5mm length). But 120W and 150W are only rated for 19V but the laptop expect 19.5V. Usually this will be compensated by tolerance but we haven't tested how a system would behave under long-term usage with such an adaptor.
In theory, 120W to 180W are enough for charing the laptop and for browsing/web/media. Even a full CPU stress test could easily be handled. But as soon as you use CPU and GPU together, you'll run into the bottleneck and your performance will be reduced.

Q: Is it possible to boot and run the laptop while the lid is kept closed?
A: Closing the lid under load is not recommended because it will limit the airflow and have a bad effect on keyboard and screen. The laptop likes to take air in from the keycaps. With lid closed, the performance might be limited due to reaching temp targets earlier.

Q: Can I get the laptop without the XMG logo? I will be using it in public presentations and I would not like any brand names visible.
A: We cannot ship without XMG logo, but you can use a dbrand skins to cover our logo. We have not yet decided if we want to invest into integrating XMG FUSION 15 into the dbrand shop. But you can already buy 100% compatible skins by using the page of the Eluktronics MAG-15 at dbrand. The chassis dimensions are exactly the same. Please be aware: you have to manually select the option "No Logo Cutout" if you want to buy these skins for your XMG FUSION 15. According to dbrand, there will be most likely no import fees when ordering from the EU as long as the order is below 100€. Check this thread for details.

Q: Will you offer thermal paste upgrades like Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut or Liquid Metal?
A: Our ODMs are using silicon-based, high-performance thermal compund from international manufacturers like Shin-Etsu (Japan) and M.G. (USA). Intel is using MG-860 in this reference design.
These products are used in the industrial sector, so they have no publicly known brand name. Nevertheless, their high thermal conductivity and guaranteed durability provide optimal and long-lasting cooling of your high-performance laptop. The thermal compounds are applied and sealed automatically by the vendor of the thermal components. They are applied in a highly controlled, standardized manner and provide the best balance of thermal performance, production tolerance and product lifetime.
We are considering offering an upgrade to Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut due to popular demand. Will keep you posted on that.

Q: Could you please provide an estimate for how much regular usage (~10 browser tabs + some IDE) battery backup would this have? Will there be any way to trade-off battery backup with performance?
A: Battery life vs. peak performance can be traded off by using the "Silent" performance profile. You can switch between profiles using a dedicated button on the machine. Your scenario (10 tabs + some IDE) sounds like mostly reading and writing. I would estimate to get at least 7 hours of solid battery life in such a scenario, maybe more. We have achieved 8 hours in 1080p Youtube streaming on WiFi with 50% screen brightness. Adblock and NoScript helps to keep your idle browser tabs in check.


I/O Ports, Peripherals


Q: Why are there not more USB-A 3.1 Gen2 or even USB 3.2 Gen2x2 ports?
A: USB-A 3.1 Gen1 is basically the same as USB 3.0. There aren't a lot of USB-A devices that support more than USB 3.0 speed. Faster devices typically use USB-C connectors and can be used on Thunderbolt 3, which is down-compatible to USB-C 3.1 Gen2. One of the USB-A ports actually supports Gen2 speed.
For the following remarks, please keep in mind that I am not an Intel rep, so everything is based on our own experience.
The mainboard design and the I/O port decisions have been made by Intel. Feedback and requests from LOEM customers have been taken into consideration. We would assume that USB 3.2. Gen2x2 (20 Gbit/s) was not considered to be important enough to safe space for 3rd party IC (integrated circuits) on the motherboard. Right now, all the USB ports and Thunderbolts are supplied by Intel's own IC, so they have full control over the hardware, firmware and driver stack and over power saving and performance control. The more IC you add, the higher your Idle power consumption will be, plus adding potential compatibility or speed issues as it often happens with 1st generation 3rd party USB implementations. I very well remember from my own experience the support stories during the first years of USB 3.0, before it was supported in the Intel chipset. On the one hand, Intel is aiming high in terms of performance and convenience, on the other hand: support and reliability still seem to be Intel's goal #1. Thus they seem to play it safe where they deem it to be reasonable.
Intel is gearing up for USB 4.0 and next-gen Thunderbolt. USB 3.2 2x2 is probably treated as little more than a roadmap accident. Peripheral vendors might see it the same way.

Q: Do you support charging over USB-C/Thunderbolt? Does it support docking stations?
A: The Thunderbolt 3 port in Intel's reference design does not support charging. As you probably know, the 100W limit would not be enough to power the whole system and it would make the mainboard more complex to combine two different ways of charging. Intel consciously opted against it and will probably do so again on future high-end gaming/studio models.
The USB-C/Thunderbolt port supports Dual-Link DisplayPort signals, directly connected to the NVIDIA Graphics. This makes proper docking station usage very convenient. The user still needs to connect the external power adaptor. Both ports (Thunderbolt and DC-in) are in the back of the laptop, making the whole setup appear very neat on the desk.

Q: How many PCIe lanes does the Thunderbolt 3 provide? Are they connected to CPU or Chipset?
A: XMG FUSION 15 supports Thunderbolt 3 with 4 lanes of PCIe 3.0. The lanes come from the chipset because all of the CPU lanes (x16) are fully occupied by the dedicated NVIDIA graphics. We are not aware of any side-effects of running Thunderbolt from the chipset. It is common practice for high-end laptops with high-end graphics. The Thunderbolt solution is of course fully validated and certified by Intel's Thunderbolt labs.

Q: Does it have a standby USB to power USB devices without turning on the laptop?
A: Yes, the USB-A port on the left side supports this feature.


LCD Screen


Q: Which LCD panel is being used? Are there plans for 1440p or 4K panels in the laptop? How about PWM flickering?
A: The panel is BOE NV156FHM-N4G. It is currently not known if the panel will change in later batches. This depends on logistics and stock. At any rate, the panel key specs will remain the same. There are currently no plans to offer resolutions above FHD in the current generation of this laptop.
There are very wide ranges on reports of Backlight Brightness PWM control on this panel in different laptops. Ranging from 200Hz to 1000Hz to no PWM at all - all on the same panel model number. Intel informs us that there are many factors (e.g. freq., display driver, BIOS settings implementation, type of dimmers & compatibility with the driver etc.) that impacts the quality of panel dimming performance. To Intel's knowledge, no kind of flickering has been reported during the validation process. Furthermore, first hands-on data from Notebookcheck indicates that no PWM occurs on this panel. With a DSLR test (multiple burst shots at 1/4000s exposure time) I can confirm that there is not a single frame of brightness dipping or black screen, not even at minimum LCD brightness. Hence, we can confirm: BOE NV156FHM-N4G in XMG FUSION 15 (with Intel) does not use PWM for backlight control.

Q: Some BTO shops, for an additional fee, manually pick out display panels with the least back-light bleed. Do you offer that? Even better, do you do that without the extra fee?
A: Intel has validated this design to avoid backlight bleed as much as possible. Currently no plans to do further binning. All dozens of MP samples we have seen so far have been exceptionally good.

Q: I'm coming from a 13" MacBook with Retina display. How am I going to fare with this 15.6" FHD screen in content creation?
A: If you got used to editing high-res visual content (photography, artwork) on your 13inch retina, things will change. On the one hand, your canvas will be larger and more convenient and ergonomic to work with. On the other hand, you will find yourself zooming in more often in order to make out fine-detail. Assuming that you have sharp 20:20 vision.
As it is, the screen resolution and specs are not planned to change within the lifetime of this product. The first realistic time-window for a refresh would be whenever Intel is releasing the next "H" series CPU generation. But even then, an upgrade on resolution will not be guaranteed.

Keyboard, Backlight, Switches, Layout


Q: What can you tell us about the mechanical keyboard of XMG FUSION 15?
A: The keyboard has already been reviewed in our XMG NEO series as being more crisp than typical membrane keyboards. Most reviewers attested it a very good score, both for gaming and for writing long texts.
The keyboard backlight can be configured per-key. Default mode is all white.
Keyboard Switch Specs:
Having no frame around the keycaps actually helps the thermals. The fans can pull in additional air from the top. This improves airflow and helps to keep the keyboard temperature at low levels during gaming. It also prevents long-term RMA issues on the keyboard. This specific keyboard switch is already in its 3rd generation and very mature by now.

Q: Is it possible to dampen the mechanical keyboard with o-rings?
A: The switch design does not lend itself to further dampening. The switch mechanic is too complex and has more moving parts than cherry. The 2mm travel distance also plays a role in not allowing more dampening.
For reference, please use this video (Youtube). We compared XMG NEO with another membrane-type keyboard. XMG NEO and FUSION share the same keyboard mechanics with the silent tactile switch and the same sound profile.

Q: Do you have LED keyboard backlight on the secondary key function, like Fn key icons?
A: Please have a look at this picture.
Btw, my working sample has blank keycaps. I took the 3 printed keycaps (F8, F9, F10) from a different sample just to demonstrate the Fn lighting for this picture.
Facts:
In my assesment, the Fn function symbols are clearly visible from the backlight in a dark room. A user should have no difficulty to recognize the icon and reach its function.

Q: What would you say are the advantages and differences with other laptops due to the fact the laptop was designed in collaboration with Intel?
A: Disclaimer: I am \not* an Intel rep. The following remarks are based on my personal experience and opinion.*
Advantages:
  1. Very strict quality control on all levels. I can't quote numbers due to NDA, but Intel NUC has extremely low RMA rates, compared to average PC mainboards and systems. Intel is driven by strict internal regulation that strifes for perfection - this applies to the whole chassis, assembly and firmware, not only the mainboard. There are also certain regulations in place, for example in terms of electro-magnetic regulation and skin temperatures. The rating label is littered with regulatory seals from every region of the world, making this laptop especially safe to use.
  2. Access to high-quality material: we have not seen any Gaming Laptops based on Magnesium alloy yet, especially not in the ODM/LOEM ecosystem. The battery cells are also much more dense than what we usually see. Intel has the buying power and the vision to not settle for mediocre parts.
  3. Down-to-earth design: Intel has made this reference design for the ODM/LOEM eco-system. The design does not try to follow any specific corporate identity, thus it does not have any unneccessary "bling bling" like all the others have. Even the Razer Blade with it's sleek shape is quite obnoxious (iny my oppinion) with it's big backlit green snake logo. With XMG FUSION however, we can continue our typical style of "Undercover Gaming".
  4. Security: you can expect stellar support in terms of BIOS and Firmware (TPM, Management Engine) updates whenever any security issues are found. This might also apply to global brands, but ODM/LOEM systems have not always been so quick to react. This is due to the huge fragmentation/customizations in ODM/LOEM systems. Intel however does now allow any fragmentation: every LOEM partner is getting the same firmware. There are many hooks for configurations in this firmware, but the source code / binaries are always the same. This makes support much easier down the line.
Disadvantages:
  1. I can't name many, of course. But I would say the strict validation also makes the partnership less flexible from a product management perspective. There is no plan currently to phase-in any 4K or 300Hz screen (FHD/144Hz ought to be enough for everyone this year) or any Core i9 in this system. Other ODMs might be more open for costly modifications based on low quantities. Intel however has streamlined their production and logistics in a way that gives us (the LOEM) very short lead times and competitive pricing, but will not allow any short-notice upgrades or customizations.

Q: Will there be a 17 inch version?
A: We can neither confirm nor deny plans for a 17 inch version at this point.

Skills

Developer Comments: We took a hard look at the current meta. The builds that are fun, effective and popular. We knew that skill builds, while it being something people want to play with, was nowhere near competitive. We knew there was an explosives damage build that was on the fringe of popularity, but none that actually relied on really good skill mods driven by skill power.
We analyzed the best damage builds and survivability builds out there and looked at their efficiency - how fast they kill, how fast they can clear content, how fast they can take down enemies - and mapped that to our skills. How much more power do skills need to get from 3K skill power (our current maximum requirement on skill power mods) to compensate for all the damage bonuses the player is "giving up" on gear to reach that skill power?
Then we looked at each skill and what it should be good at (burst, sustain, single target damage, survivability etc) and went to work tuning the mods to make a skill build approach the efficiency of a "red" damage build or a "blue" tank build. To that effect, here are the current changes to skill mods power levels, and in some cases base numbers, on skills.
 

Skill Haste

Cooldown Reduction has been replaced with skill haste. Skill haste works equivalent to speed. So 100% skill haste reduces cooldown by 50%, like a car speeding up by 100% getting to it's destination in half the time. This means that the player can invest in more than 100% Haste and still get something back. It also means there's a diminishing return to Skill Haste, as opposed to cooldown reduction where each point was actually worth more than the last one. This allows us to have a good amount of Skill Haste possible from gear, but even larger amounts granted by high skill power Skill Mods, granting skill builds more frequent access to their souped up skills.
To that effect, these are the changes to Haste (formerly Cooldown Reduction)
  • Removed the 90% Cooldown Reduction hard cap
  • Lowered the minimum Cooldown cap for all skills from 10 seconds to 3, except for the Chem Launcher which is now 8
  • Renamed all instances of Cooldown Reduction on existing gear to Skill Haste, with a 50% increase to their base values
  • Eg: +10% Cooldown Reduction will become +15% Skill Haste
  • Increased Surge talent Skill Haste bonus from +10% to +20%
  • Increased Alps Summit Armament 1-piece Skill Haste bonus from +10% to +20%

Crafting

  • Added a crafting bench upgrade in World Tier 5 that allows players to craft at Gear Score 500. The items crafted are gear score 500, there will be no random range in terms of gear score/power. The bench upgrade is given to players when they complete the “Enter WT5”-project (same as all the other bench upgrades in endgame, the upgrade will be available at the bench once the bench is upgraded to World Tier 5). Players already in WT5 will automatic get it as they log in, The upgrade requires 1 weapon and 1 gear piece of Gear Score 490+, and some of each Specialized (blue) material Crafted items can be used in recalibration, both as materials and to be improved
  • Deconstructing High-End gear now guarantees a brand material (increased from 50% drop chance). Named branded items also award the brand mat on deconstruction
  • Deconstructing gear set items awards 4 of each Specialized (blue) material
  • Added an opt-in perk for the player to share blueprints and materials between characters in endgame. Some Blueprints and mats are excluded to not break game logic/progression, such as the specific exotic materials. This perk can be crafted and the blueprint is available at Inaya, the Crafting vendor.
  • The blueprints awarded from control points, vendors and projects are merged into one pool of rewards. Players can get all these blueprints from all three sources. Once the pools has been exhausted, none of the sources will give more blueprints.
 

Grenades

  • Increased the radius of the Gunner's Riot Foam Grenade from 2m to 3m
 

PvP

  • Changed shotgun PvP modifier to 1.0 (was 1.65)
    • Net result in PvP with revised normalization modifiers:
      • M870: -14% damage
      • AA12: -21% damage
      • Super90: -17% damage

  • Changed the general PvP modifier to 0.55 (was 0.40)
